Ex-Manchester United defender Wes Brown believes his former team-mate Wayne Rooney needed to be given more time at Birmingham City, having seen his tenure at St. Andrew's last just 15 games.

The former England captain's reign at the West Midlands club lasted just 83 days, as Blues dropped from play-off contenders to relegation candidates in the space of two months, with the club yet to guarantee their Championship status for next term.

Rooney is yet to return to management and has since dived into the world of punditry before taking on his newest challenge, with the 38-year-old hopeful that his time with Birmingham will not leave an irreversible stain on his managerial record.

Despite sitting fifth in the Championship table under the guidance of John Eustace, Blues opted to part company with the former Watford defender in October, with Rooney coming in as his replacement, along with Ashley Cole and John O'Shea, who would join his backroom staff in the West Midlands.

However, his first game would see him fall to defeat against a former Manchester United team-mate in Michael Carrick, losing 1-0 to Middlesbrough, which would be the start of five league games without a win before Rooney's first triumph over Sheffield Wednesday.

It would prove to be a slippery slope for the former England captain from then on, picking up just one victory from his remaining 10 games in charge, with his tenure at St. Andrew's lasted just 83 days, with many likening his time at the club to Gianfranco Zola's in years previous, with their promising start to the season now completely evaporated.

Blues have still yet to recover from Rooney's disastrous tenure. While there was an upturn in fortunes following the arrival of Tony Mowbray, the club announced the 60-year-old would require treatment and would not return to the dugout until the start of pre-season, with former boss, Gary Rowett, named in interim charge until the end of the campaign.

Birmingham remain outside the Championship relegation zone on goal difference alone, and face another tough test this weekend when they travel to Loftus Road to take on Queens Park Rangers.

Having played with each other at Old Trafford for seven years in their playing careers, former Red Devils defender, Brown, was keen to back up his former Manchester United team-mate when addressing his stint in the West Midlands.

The former defender spoke exclusively to Football League World via instantcasinos.com about the former England captain's time in the West Midlands, admitting that he needed to be given more time to add to his squad.

"Obviously, he has gone in there and thought he would have a bit of time, but the results were not right, and the results went the other way," Brown started.

"It's hard to take because you do want time to get your players in and build the way you want to play, so you would be absolutely devastated.

"But, Birmingham made the decision to get rid of him and, if anything, you have to take it as an experience."

Rooney admitted that he was looking to get back into management after appearing on BBC One's coverage of the FA Cup clash between Nottingham Forest and Manchester United.

Despite his poor record with Blues, Brown believes that we will see Rooney back in the managerial hot seat in the near future.

"I know he still wants to be a manager, and sometimes it won't happen how you want it to happen, but I always think time is key in anything building your squad.
