The recent game between Real Madrid and Manchester City was not just a clash between two of the world’s best teams but also the best leagues.

Los Blancos represent the pinnacle of La Liga, while Pep Guardiola’s side are quite clearly the best team in England. The Spanish side did eventually come through, but not without being dominated for large parts by the English side.

Speaking to the media in a recent interview, the Real Madrid veteran commented on his views of the Premier League and how La Liga and Spain compared to the English league.

“I’m in Spain and it doesn’t get much better than playing for Real Madrid. But, the Premier League, in general, presents a big challenge. It’s one of the best leagues in the world, if not the best.”

As a player who has experienced the level and experience of the Premier League first-hand, the Croatian international then elaborated on what made it special compared to the other leagues in the world.

“The football culture is truly unique and you have to experience it to appreciate it. There’s a big match practically every week and that’s what attracts players to go there,” he remarked.

Modric was then jokingly told that he was the only missing piece in the Premier League, to which he replied:

“(laughs) I did my part. It would be difficult at my age now! But you never know!”

Speaking about his time at Tottenham Hotspur before his eventual move to Real Madrid, Modric insisted that it was the right decision at that point in his career.

“Coming to Tottenham was the right decision. If I could have written the script for how my career would develop, I couldn’t have written it better than how everything has turned out.”

Finally, the Real Madrid star revealed that he still kept up to date with the Premier League and his former club despite his busy schedule.

“When you leave the Premier League, you don’t just stop following it. So, I follow the league, especially the teams with Croatian players. And, of course, I still follow Tottenham.”
