Sheffield United wing-back Jayden Bogle has revealed the competition in the squad is something he and his teammates take confidence from, speaking to The Star.

The Blades are currently under a transfer embargo and were for much of the January transfer window – but they currently have a decent amount of depth in most areas.

Wes Foderingham and Adam Davies are currently competing for a starting spot between the sticks, with the additions of Anel Ahmedhodzic and Ciaran Clark going some way to ensuring that they have enough depth in central defence.

Even with Khadra’s departure, they have an adequate amount of depth up top and that may be required with Billy Sharp being an injury doubt ahead of United’s clash against Middlesbrough this evening.

And in terms of Bogle, he’s currently in competition with George Baldock for a spot on the right-hand side, with Enda Stevens, Max Lowe and Rhys Norrington-Davies able to play on the left when available, though the latter has been absent for a considerable chunk of the campaign.

Although right wing-back Bogle and his teammates will want as much game time as possible, the fact there is a decent amount of competition is seen as a good thing from their perspective.

He said: “It’s great being out there with Max [Lowe] too.

“We were having a chat the other day, about how we’d hardly played alongside each other since coming here, what with him going out on loan (to Nottingham Forest) last season and me getting injured.

“But there’s so much competition and, although you might not think it, we also take confidence from that.”

The Verdict:

You feel their depth and consistency has proven to be the difference between themselves and many others in the promotion race, with competition especially fierce at wing-back.

Arguably, Baldock, Bogle, Lowe, Norrington-Davies and Stevens all deserve to be regular starters at this level and it will be interesting to see what happens in terms of their futures.

Bogle is someone who could succeed Baldock in the long term – but if the former wants to fulfil his potential and continue improving – he will need to play as many minutes as possible.

In terms of Lowe, he could potentially be one of the first names on the teamsheet next season with Stevens’ contract expiring at the end of the season, though it remains to be seen whether Paul Heckingbottom will want to strengthen this area.

Norrington-Davies, meanwhile, can operate centrally and with his versatility in mind, he will be hopeful of maximising his game time.

Competition for a starting spot for all players is only likely to get more intense next season if they secure promotion though.
