“We are convinced that we can turn around the situation,” Luis Enrique had said after his Paris Saint-Germain had fallen to Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
The hosts had been far from their best on the night as they succumbed to a 3-2 scoreline. It was only a narrow deficit that they would need to overcome in Barcelona, but it was a task that the club had never before succeeded in.
PSG had never managed to progress in the Champions League after losing the first leg of a tie. It was a historical fact that only made the situation far more daunting for the visitors as they travelled to the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc.
Despite this, Luis Enrique kept the faith in his side and in becoming the first to break an unfortunate historical trend for Les Parisiens. His faith was rewarded as PSG managed to record a 4-1 comeback victory to progress past Barcelona on a 6-4 aggregate.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Luis Enrique explained, “You have to hope for the day that will change everything and it was today.” The manager continued, “I think only the supporters believed that we had a chance to continue to the next part of the competition.”
