The influence of QPR winger Chris Willock has been hailed after he played a key role in the 1-0 victory against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Willock proved a nuisance for Albion’s makeshift backline throughout the afternoon in W12 and set up Charlie Austin’s 89th-minute winner with a wonderfully weighted cross.

Valerien Ismael options were limited with a number of key defensive players unavailable and the R’s took advantage to claim a win that sees them leapfrog the Baggies in the table.

The victory was dissected on FLW TV’s EFL Weekend Review this morning and Willock was highlighted as the standout performer at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Football League World journalist Ben Wignall said: “When you’ve got someone like Chris Willock, who is in the form he is, creating that goal to Charlie Austin to score the winner, I think you can pin all your hopes on him and expect something to happen.

“Especially in recent weeks, he’s been scoring goals for fun.”

With Ilias Chair away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Morocco, the impetus is on Willock as the main creative force in Mark Warburton’s side and he certainly has stepped up to the plate – scoring the second in the 2-1 win against Birmingham City earlier this month and assisting Saturday’s winner.

“He’s so difficult to mark because he’s so intelligent,” said Football League World‘s Billy Mulley. “He finds those positions between the midfield and the defensive lines. When he gets the ball, he’s so difficult to stop. Quick touches and nudges the ball into space – he’s so difficult to manage to defend against.

“Obviously, he’s got that subsequent end product as well as he’s shown. He’s just one of those players that would just be an absolute nightmare to mark as a defender.

“He’s one of those that you don’t know, do I go tight and risk the possibility of getting turned or do I afford him the space and let him pick off the defence because that’s what he does.

“He’s going to be a massive weapon for QPR as they continue to try and secure a play-off spot or even an automatic promotion spot if that becomes available if they continue on this run.

“Willock has been central to QPR’s attacking flair this season and when you add Chair back into that I’m sure it will be even more difficult for defences.

“I think he’s a brilliant player that could easily be playing in the Premier League but he’ll be hoping that’s with QPR next season.”
