Emi Martínez is certainly not one to shy away from attention, and he was once again in the thick of it as Aston Villa defeated Lille in a crazy Europa Conference League penalty shoot-out.

The Argentine World-Cup winning keeper had already been the pantomime villain in both regular and extra-time, being booed mercilessly by the home fans following his comments after that win over France in the Qatar final. He was also booked for time wasting in the 39th minute, rather hilariously.

That yellow card almost came back to bite him during the shoot-out when he received another one for engaging with the home fans while waiting for Ollie Watkins to take Villa’s second spot kick.

In a dramatic moment, he was given a second yellow but not sent off due to a little-known rule. IFAB law 10 (determining the outcome of a match), states that: “Warnings and cautions (YCs) issued during the match (including during extra time) are not carried forward into kicks from the penalty mark (KFPM).

Martinez then went onto save the decisive penalty from Benjamin André to seal Villa’s progression to the semi-finals, and show again why he is the king of the shootout.

That much is known but as for any chance of the big keeper returning to the French city any time soon, you wouldn’t bet on it.
