In an interview with Het Nieuwsblad, former Manchester City and Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure has been speaking about his decision to become assistant to Carl Hoefkens at Standard Liege. The Ivorian said ‘I am very patient and have to take my steps very carefully and in the right way. That’s why I come to Belgium, because I want to learn from top coaches like Carl, who has enormous experience’.

Toure was also speaking about his recent time with Tottenham, where he coached the youth sides. He was full of thanks for what the London side had done, adding ‘What Tottenham did for me was incredible, they let me work there and develop me as a coach. I will never be able to thank them enough for what they have done for me’.

Ultimately, Toure said he would like to one day become a head coach in his own right. However, he is content with learning from others at the moment. Given his playing history, the lure of the Premier League will certainly be something that is asked often. He stated to HNB that he would like to manage in the English top flight, should the opportunity arise. For now, he will be helping Hoefkens to try and continue the success that Ronny Deila had began to bring to Standard Liege before he departed for Club Brugge.
