Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer will not join Manchester United in January.

Recently, BILD reported that Sommer was close to joining United with the deal likely to advance quickly.

Sommer, as per BILD would come in as a direct replacement for David de Gea whose Old Trafford contract will not be extended.

Since Erik ten Hag’s arrival, there have been massive doubts about De Gea and his suitability for the Dutchman’s way of playing football.

De Gea has repeatedly shown his limitations in distributing the ball, playing with his feet and initiating sweeping action as all modern goalkeepers do.

However, according to the reliable Florian Plettenberg, Sommer will not join the Red Devils at the turn of the year and any likely deal may have to wait until the summer.

At the end of the Bundesliga season, Sommer will be a free agent unless he pens a new deal with Mönchengladbach.

United could therefore procure his services for free.

Plettenberg says, “He won’t join Manchester United in winter.

“But he is still a candidate for Manchester United in summer 2023 – as we have reported weeks ago.

“A contract extension at Borussia Mönchengladbach is not hot at this stage.”

The Swiss footballer’s arrival, especially for free, would allow Ten Hag to spend his summer transfer budget on other priority situations such as a right-back, another midfielder and a forward.

The only downside to bringing in Sommer is that at 33, he does not represent a credible long-term situation. He is a year older than De Gea, which would force the club to go back to the market after a limited period.
