Yann Sommer has admitted that he struggled to deal with all the speculation regarding his move to Bayern Munich and had to take a step back.

Disaster struck for Bayern in December when first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was ruled out for the remainder of the season after breaking his leg while skiing.

Not having confidence in Sven Ulreich, the Bundesliga champions began to search for a new goalkeeper and ended up buying Sommer from Borussia Monchengladbach after the 34-year-old impressed for Switzerland at the World Cup.

It was the biggest move of his career and he admits that he struggled with all the attention he received in the media as a result of it.

“That time was wild," he told Blick. "But that’s the football business. We had very open talks with Gladbach, which I really appreciated. After eight and a half years, that was important.

“At some point I withdrew from the whole thing. It was a lot, a lot was being written. I stayed calm and watched the whole thing with my family.

“It all happened very quickly. My wife flew to Munich with me. After that, I had long medical tests, completed a short final training session, signed the contract and played in Leipzig.

"I’m lucky to have a wife who is very open to new things. But of course, we were thinking. I had a great situation in Gladbach. But moving to Bayern is now a new challenge in my career. I am glad that I can take on this challenge."
