Speaking to Borussia Mönchengladbach’s official channels, Yann Sommer gave an update on his situation as his contract expires at the end of the season with Bayern Munich showing an interest in the Switzerland number one as a replacement for Manuel Neuer.

Sommer made his return from his break after the World Cup alongside Nico Elvedi and Ko Itakura and immediately participated in first-team training.

To the in-club media, Sommer spoke on his contract situation: “I had a few quiet days with my family in Switzerland, was able to get through the World Cup and I’m happy that it’s starting again.” He then expanded on his future: “As far as my contractual situation and my future are concerned, there were open talks with the club before the World Cup. We will resume them in the coming days as agreed.”

Sommer first joined Gladbach in 2014 from Basel and has gone on to make 335 appearances for die Fohlen in that period whilst also establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the league.

The 34-year-old is also likely to not be the only player to potentially leave Gladbach in the summer as Marcus Thuram’s contract also expires in 2023 and if Gladbach wants to make any money off of the Frenchman, he would need to be sold in the winter – they want a reported €12m for the World Cup runner-up.
