As quoted by Blick, in speaking to SRF after his Switzerland side’s opening 1-0 win over Cameroon at the World Cup in Qatar, former Liverpool and Stoke City attacker Xherdan Shaqiri explained Switzerland needed to improve in upcoming games with Brazil and Serbia to be a success at the World Cup:
“We wanted to start well but it has to be said that both teams didn’t have a great game from the beginning. The second half was much better for us, we created more chances and were able to make it 1-0. In the end, it could have been 2-0 or 3-0 if we had taken our chances. In the end, what really matters is that we were able to win the first game. The first duty is fulfilled, but now we have to improve, clearly… You can see that we’re relieved. It was 0-0 for a long time [but] the opening goal gave us a lot of self-confidence and we were then able to play with more positivity after that, it was game-changing.”
Switzerland’s next World Cup game in Qatar is against Brazil on Monday before a final Group G meeting with Serbia next Friday.
