Chelsea had generated almost 1 xG in the hour before Malo Gusto was sent off yesterday. That’s a good amount, and a sign that the system is creating chances.

He points out that, had the two chances for Raheem Sterling and Nico Jackson been flagged onside we would have had 1.5xG – a phenomenal amount for less than an hour played.

Including them is a bit of a stretch, but we’ll allow it. Everyone played on in those moments, it wasn’t like the game was blown dead.

It backs up what we’ve seen basically in every game so far. Chelsea start well for 15 minutes, lose confidence and play a little more cautious for 15 minutes, then create nothing for 15 minutes.

We get a little more spark after half time, but it quickly wears off, and that’s generally when the other team score. Yesterday, it was also when the red card came.

The stats show that we were creating before the red, but just as we do game after game, we were just waiting for the first setback to arrive so we could crumple.
