The numbers from last night’s Chelsea defeat to Liverpool were absolutely scandalous.
The Reds scored 4, missed a penalty, and hit the woodwork 4 times. They finished the game with 3.18 expected goals, while Chelsea managed just 0.83.
Jurgen Klopp’s team were on the front foot from the very start, harrying and pressing and pushing Chelsea back. They rained down shots, leaving goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic as one of the few Blues who could walk away from the game with high head held high.
You can complain heartily about the penalties Chelsea weren’t given, and with plenty of reason. But you can’t argue with the 90 minutes apart from those moments, and with these numbers.
The midfield was totally open, the attack wasteful and unable to hold the ball up, the defence error prone, hesitant and soft.
Fans are rightly unhappy, and Mauricio Pochettino was furious after the game. He and his players were not up to it.
