Barcelona coach Xavi has addressed the media ahead of their Copa del Rey meeting with Athletic Club on Thursday.
This is what he had to say.
âIt isnât an easy or pleasant situation but the interests of the club are the most important.
âWeâre in a complex and difficult spot because if he doesnât renew, the club must find a solution. We canât be in this situation. Weâve waited a long time. Mateu [Alemany] has been in talks for five months and we canât wait any longer.
âIf he doesnât renew will he play? We arenât contemplating that. Either he renews or he leaves. It isnât one or the other. I donât want to disrespect anyone but the message is clear: either renew or look for an exit solution.
âAm I disappointed in him? No â and thatâs the last thing Iâll say about DembĂ©lĂ©.â
âHis renewal is a priority. For me, heâs a very important part of what weâre doing. Heâs an extraordinary defender with a winning character.
âWe have to reach an agreement quickly because heâs a player for the present and the future and we need players like that.â
âItâs because we arenât getting results and when that happens, they also criticise me. Thatâs how it is. For me, heâs essential and canât be questioned.
âHe knows heâs made mistakes but thatâs just from a bad spell of form. If we play at our best, he is the best in the world in his position, without a doubt.
âThere will always be debates at Barça and we accept that. I remember there was debate over Busquets in 2010 with the national team. They said he shouldnât play and in the end: world champions.â
âThe return of Pedri and Ansu Fati is good. Ansu has been out of action for longer than Pedri. Today Pedri is at 100% but we will make our estimates.
âMartin Braithwaite is doing well. Weâll see if we can include him in the squad for tomorrow but heâs a great professional and helps us a lot.â
