Barcelona were knocked out of the Supercopa de Espana on Thursday and there are concerns amongst the board at Camp Nou that their recent form could spill into the domestic and European campaigns this year.

The Catalan giants have suffered embarrassing losses to Roma and Liverpool in their last two Champions League seasons’ and it’s thought that the Blaugrana hierarchy are wary of a similar thing happening again this time around.

As such, they want to make a change as soon as possible and had contacted Xavi about taking charge forthwith.

That though, will not be happening with the 39-year-old having tentatively turned down their offer this weekend.

Xaiv however, would consider taking over in the summer as he wants to remain with current side Al-Sadd until the end of the season.

Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman has also been considered for the role but one thing seems for certain – Valverde will not be at Barça beyond May.
