Barcelona played out a disappointing 0-0 draw against Athletic Bilbao to take a further hit in their pursuit of defending La Liga crown. Speaking after the game, manager Xavi admitted that this team did not play a good game and the fixture was nothing but a ‘lost opportunity’.

We did not play a good game, we should have taken a step forward because it was a very important day and we are leaving sad because we did not offer the best version in a match that required much more,” said the manager as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

“In the game, in sensations, in closing distances, in everything. It was a very good opportunity because we could have placed second and six points behind the leader, we knew it and we failed. Today we really have to reproach ourselves for things and think that we have not been well,” added the manager.

Xavi’s verdict in injuries

Barcelona faced massive injury crises against Athletic Club, with both Frenkie de Jong and Pedri being forced out injured. While the exact gravity of the issue is still unknown, the manager said that basic information will be revealed today.

“It is unfortunate due to the injuries of two very important footballers. Between today and tomorrow [he spoke after the game] we will know more things but it doesn’t look good and I suppose the team has also been affected by those injuries.

“They are both affected, we are sad for everything that happened but especially for those two absences that I imagine will be for matches. Sad, today is a sad day,” he added.

Speaking specifically about Pedri, the manager added that it is a shame that he had to get injured last night since he trained really well leading to the game.

“He had trained very well this week, he was at a very high level and it is a shame. He was very well physically and he has done everything to recover, to be well.

“We have taken care of everything, all the details, and this has happened again, but these are football situations and he will come back stronger.”

Disappointed by the result

The manager added that the team lacked belief throughout the night and a victory on Sunday would have helped the team in catching Real Madrid.

“This victory would have served to hit the table and we haven’t done it, but hey, it’s a point and we have to continue.

“The word perhaps is not ambition but rather believing more in what we are doing, having more faith. We lacked that point of determination to say ‘let’s go for the game’, which is why today’s feeling is one of disappointment,” he explained.
