With the 2023/24 campaign coming to a close, it is fair to conclude that it has been a season to forget for coach Xavi Hernandez.

The Spaniard is facing an uncertain future at the club while his Barcelona team has endured a trophy-less campaign.

Just when it was thought things could not go worse than this, Xavi has been dealt with a fresh blow by none other than UEFA.

UEFA sanctions Xavi

As reported by SPORT, Europe’s football governing body has sanctioned Xavi by suspending him for two matches.

Xavi’s suspension is linked to Barcelona’s second-leg quarter-final encounter against Paris Saint-Germain, where the Spaniard showed all his frustration.

Xavi was particularly livid with Ronald Araujo’s early red card and later in the game, he unleashed all his anger by kicking one of the television camera protections.

Once the game was over, Xavi made several controversial statements as well, which did not go well with the referee or the UEFA. As such, the footballing body has handed Xavi a two-match suspension.

Apart from Xavi, Sergi Roberto has also received a two-match suspension for his protests and Ronald Araujo a one-game suspension for his expulsion.

Barcelona fined by UEFA

In addition, UEFA has fined Barcelona a total of €60,000, which is divided into three different segments.

A total of €26,000 was fined for inappropriate conduct of the team throughout the match. €26,500 more was fined after Barcelona fans threw objects into the stadium.

Finally, UEFA has fined Barcelona €5,000 for a pitch invasion, thus totalling a fee of almost €60,000.

It remains to be seen whether Barcelona, who have been very defensive of Xavi’s actions on the touchline, issue an appeal against UEFA’s decisions.
