Ronald Koeman was given an incredibly difficult task upon his appointment. Steadying such a rocky ship that is Barcelona at the moment is much easier said than done and for that reason, he should be given time.

However, time is exactly what he might not have if recent reports from Gerard Romero are to be believed. The reliable journalist did an interview with RAC1, discussing all things Barcelona and touching upon the leadership of the club in the coming years.

He believes that if Koeman fails to bring any silverware back to the Camp Nou, Xavi Hernández will replace him as head coach next season. Of course, the rumours of the ex-Barcelona captain returning back home are not exactly new.

In fact, it does only feel like a matter of time before Xavi does exactly that. However, it also puts a lot of pressure on Koeman to make something happen in a campaign that many have described as transitional at best.

With the huge squad rebuild on the way and now with Josep Maria Bartomeu officially gone, Barcelona are as unstable as they can be in a given moment.

It all depends, however, on the new board, which should be appointed within the following three months. By January 2021, the Catalans will have a new president and that’s also when these kinds of decisions will be made.

If Koeman fails in 2020/21, he might not even last long enough to get a second chance.
