Bayer Leverkusen just never know when to give up. Josip Stanisic scored in the seventh minute of stoppage time to secure a point for the Bundesliga champions against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, meaning Xabi Alonso’s side are now unbeaten in 45 games across all competitions.

It’s a testament to the mentality that Alonso has instilled within the squad, something that has been missing for decades. Speaking to DAZN after the game, Alonso speaks of Stanisic’s equaliser being an “emotional” one.

“The goal we conceded hurt, but we kept going and I’m happy with the reaction. We’re still waiting for our big party. Now we’ll recover for a bit and then prepare well for Stuttgart, which will be a very exciting game,” said Alonso.

“We just don’t want to lose. The goal was very emotional, celebrating with the fans was very nice and it means a lot to us all.”

Niclas Füllkrug put Borussia Dortmund in the lead in the 81st minute before Stanisic headed in an equaliser for Leverkusen deep into added time.

With 25 wins and five draws in 30 Bundesliga games this season, Bayer 04 sit on 80 points, and with four games remaining can beat the all-time record points tally in the Bundesliga, set by Bayern Munich (91) in their 2012/13 treble winning season.
