According to Sports Zone, Xabi Alonso ruled out the possibility of joining Liverpool as their new manager two weeks ago due to a desire to stay in Germany. With Bayern Munich also interested in the promising Spanish head coach, this left staying at Bayer Leverkusen or joining the Bundesliga champions as his only options.

Liverpool had made Alonso their top target to replace Jurgen Klopp in the summer, according to Foot Mercato. Alonso himself has now revealed that he is set to reject the advances of Bayern Munich and Liverpool in favour of staying at Bayer Leverkusen for one more season. Ruben Amorim is now considered to be the favourite for the Liverpool role.

Chelsea never considered

Chelsea had also been linked with appointing Alonos with former PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino’s role at Stamford Bridge far from secure. Nevertheless, the Blues were not considered by the Leverkusen manager and are now firmly out of contention, according to Sports Zone.
