In a surprising twist of football fate, Xabi Alonso has chosen to stick with Bayer Leverkusen, despite receiving offers that most would jump at—the chance to manage Liverpool or Bayern Munich. This decision has sparked a lively debate, notably with Paul Merson, the Arsenal icon, voicing his disbelief on Sky Sports. Merson warned, “This chance may never come again. I don’t see Bayer Leverkusen winning the Bundesliga next season; I expect Bayern Munich, the juggernaut, to carry on as they have the last 10, 11, 12 years.”

Alonso’s refusal of the roles at Liverpool and Bayern came after both Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel announced their impending departures at season’s end. With a three-year contract from Liverpool on the table, Alonso’s choice to remain where he led Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title this season has been met with mixed reactions.
Merson articulated his astonishment, stating, “If I’m being honest yes, I’m surprised. I think you’ve got to make hay while the sun shines in management, and you’re talking about two of the biggest jobs in world football.” He further emphasized the rarity of such opportunities, expressing a poignant hope that Alonso does not come to regret his decision. “But these opportunities come along once in a blue moon and I just hope he doesn’t regret this decision. That’s my opinion. I know what managers are like, but everyone gets the sack in the end.”
In response, Alonso didn’t hold back during an interview with Spanish publication AS. With a pointed remark “Paul Merson will have made decisions that I don’t value,” he referenced Merson’s personal challenges, which have included battles with alcohol, drugs, and gambling. His retort not only underscores his comfort with his current position but also highlights his disinterest in trading stability for prestige.
As the dust settles on this debate, it remains to be seen how Alonso’s decision will pan out in the grand scheme of his managerial career. Will his loyalty to Leverkusen be a masterstroke as he builds a lasting legacy, or a missed opportunity as he passes up the helm of two of the world’s footballing powerhouses? Only time will tell, but for now, Alonso remains committed to his project at Leverkusen, much to the chagrin of critics like Merson.
