Xabi Alonso is sensationally set to stay at Bayer Leverkusen next season.
That is according to the Times’ Paul Joyce, who has long been renowned for his reliability regarding Liverpool news.
Joyce reports that the club do not believe their former player will be available, which follows up on comments made earlier in the day by Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß, who said it was “probably impossible” to lure Alonso, who also played for the Bavarians in his success-laden career.
The 42-year-old had been widely rumoured to be the preferred candidate for both clubs this summer as they look to replace Jürgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel respectively.
The Times also state that Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim and Brightons’s Roberto De Zerbi are likely to be next in line for the Liverpool job.
The news comes as a massive boost to Leverkusen as they close in on their first-ever Bundesliga title, as well as chase a possible treble and unbeaten season.
