Bayern Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has pledged his future to the German giants by penning a contract extension, as confirmed by the club.
With his current contract expiring in the summer of 2024, the Spanish manager has signed a new two-year deal until 2026.
“We overcame resistance together and created the best of all perspectives. The current contract extension is an expression of great appreciation and mutual trust,” said Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes.
Alonso has had a resounding impact since his appointment in October, helping Die Werkself recover from their lowest ebb and become one of the most exciting squads in Europe.
The Spaniard weathered the storm at Leverkusen and created a formidable unit that finished sixth in the Bundesliga last season – securing Europa League qualification in the process – and reached the semi-finals of the Europa League before losing to AS Roma.
Alonso’s work has caught the attention of his former club Real Madrid, who have lined up him as the successor to Carlo Ancelotti.
The Italian manager is widely expected to leave after the 2023/24 season for the Brazilian national team, and Los Blancos want the legendary Spanish midfielder to lead the side in future.
Madrid would have hoped to secure his services for free, provided that his previous contract expires next summer, but they will now have to pay a significant compensation fee to facilitate his return to the Spanish capital.
The 41-year-old recently commented on the rumours regarding Madrid, hinting about a potential move in future, though he is currently focused on his objectives at Leverkusen.
All eyes are on Alonso’s Leverkusen after an impressive last season, and they look as genuine title contenders who can end Bayern Munich’s dominance in the Bundesliga.
They will also look to replicate a similar run in the Europa League and take the extra step to get their hands on the title.
The groundwork has also been laid, with Leverkusen welcoming Granit Xhaka, Jonas Hofmann, Alejandro Grimaldo and Victor Boniface to strengthen their squad.
