Leverkusen look set to end Bayern Munich's reign of terror in the Bundesliga this season and they've also stolen a record off the current German champions.

Victory against Mainz means that Alonso's Leverkusen are now 33 games unbeaten in all competitions, a record for any German club. The previous record was held by Bayern under Hansi Flick's guidance over the course of two seasons between 2020 and 2021.

The run of 33 games unbeaten across the Bundesliga, Europa League and DFB Pokal started with an 8-0 victory against Teutonia 05 at the start of the 2023/24 season. There have been some astounding wins along the way, including a 3-0 demolition of Bayern and two 3-2 victories over RB Leipzig.

Alonso's side have only failed to win four games this season - draws with Bayern, Borussia Dortmund, Stuttgart and Borussia Monchengladbach - and could feasibly win a treble of trophies come the end of the campaign given their sensational recent form.

Leverkusen will be aiming to extend their astonishing record when they face Koln in the Bundesliga next weekend.

Leverkusen look set to win a first ever Bundesliga title this season and currently sit 11 points ahead of 33-time champions Bayern before the Bavarians face RB Leipzig on Saturday evening. They could also become the first Bundesliga side to go an entire campaign unbeaten.

The German side face off against second division side Fortuna Dusseldorf in the semi-final of the DFB Pokal as well, a competition they have only won once before in 1993. Leverkusen will face Borussia Monchengladbach, 2. Bundesliga outfit Kaiserslautern or third tier Saarburcken if they reach the final.

Alonso's men reached the Europa League last 16 after winning all six of their group stage games, including two victories over Qarabag. Leverkusen have been drawn against the Azerbaijani side in the next round of the competition, so should secure their spot in the quarter-final with little fuss.
