Bayer Leverkusen have dominated the headlines in the world of football after securing the Bundesliga title for the first time in the club’s history.

Leverkusen also ended Bayern Munich’s 11-year monopoly in German football, and it was all thanks to the brilliance of Xabi Alonso.

The Spaniard has become the hottest managerial prospect in Europe right now after leading Leverkusen to a league title in his first season at the club.

Although Alonso has confirmed he will stay at Leverkusen next season, various European clubs, including Real Madrid are keeping close tabs on the former midfielder.

Leverkusen CEO backs Alonso to join Madrid

Now, in a major boost for Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has recently admitted that Alonso could join Los Blancos in the future.

“It’s possible that Xabi Alonso will become Real Madrid manager one day, yes,” Carro told AS (h/t Fabrizio Romano).

This is not the first time Carro has had to address Alonso’s future, as he was flooded with questions about the Spaniard earlier in the year.

Following Xabi’s confirmation, though, Carro has appeared much calmer and is willing to speculate about his future.

Timing to be key

Carro’s comments are indeed quite promising for Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are not in immediate need of a new manager but would welcome the option of Alonso replacing Carlo Ancelotti.

Ancelotti’s current deal at Santiago Bernabeu expires in 2026, whereas Alonso has stated clearly that he would remain one more season at Leverkusen, though that might extend next year.

Timing, therefore, could be of the essence for Real Madrid if they are to beat other European giants in the race to hire Xabi Alonso as head coach sometime in the future.
