A handful of Women’s Super League matches were scheduled on Sunday and it’s safe to say it was a tasty day of football.

Here is how everything went down.

Manchester City v Tottenham

Scorers: Hemp 6′, Benameur 86′ (OG); Williams 61′

After being dumped out of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, City looked to continue their strong form in the WSL as they hosted Tottenham.

Lauren Hemp opened the scoring just six minutes in but celebrations were cut short after Esme Morgan was stretchered off following a collision.

Tottenham tried to link up play but City maintained their dominance. Spurs goalkeeper Becky Spencer, however, made a ‘Save of the Season’ contender on Ellen White to keep the scoreline down.

After the break, Rachel Williams was able to tie things up and Jessica Naz then saw an effort go inches wide.

Later in dramatic fashion, Spurs made it 2-1 after the ball hit the post then bounced off City goalkeeper Karima Benameur into her own net.

However, the ball appeared to hit off Rosella Ayane’s hand in the build-up.

With the result, Spurs sit fourth while City sit seventh.

Leicester City v Manchester United

Scorers: McManus 61′; Toone 36′, Thorisdóttir 47′, Thomas 71′

WSL newcomers Leicester City hosted Manchester United over at King Power Stadium.

The visitors had a few early attempts to try and open the scoring but the breakthrough didn’t come until late in the half when a long-range rocket from Ella Toone blasted past goalkeeper Kirstie Levell.

United’s momentum then continued minutes after the restart and Maria Thorisdóttir doubled the lead.

Defence then took the spotlight for both sides as goalkeepers Levell and Mary Earps were each called into action.

The latter, however, was unable to stop Abbie McManus’ goal from crossing the line despite getting a hand to it.

Eventually, substitute Martha Thomas buried a loose ball in the box to secure a 3-1 away win for the visitors.

With the result, Leicester sit ninth and Manchester United sit third.

Birmingham City v Brighton & Hove Albion

Scorers: Williams 2′, Kaagman 45+1′ (P), Carter 50′, Koivisto 58′, Green 70′

The match at St. Andrew’s where Birmingham City hosted Brighton got off to a quick start!

An early corner for the visitors was well defended but Victoria Williams was able to volley the ball into the net two minutes in.

Brighton then went on to double their lead through an Inessa Kaagman penalty right before the half-time whistle.

Being down 2-0 was a manageable scoreline for the hosts but Brighton quickly put the comeback out of reach in the second half.

Goals from Danielle Carter and Emma Koivisto made it 4-0 before the team set up Kayleigh Green whose chip wrapped up a big win.

With the result, Birmingham sit tenth while Brighton sit first.

Reading v Arsenal

Scorers: Beattie 17′, Mead 30′, Miedema 32′, 50′

Arsenal travelled to Madjeski Stadium aiming to continue their run of good fortune and put on a convincing show.

While Reading made their presence known with a few shots in the opening minutes, the Gunners took the lead through Jennifer Beattie.

And it didn’t take long for Arsenal to add more as a volley from Beth Mead doubled the lead before she set up Vivianne Miedema for another.

Mead now has four goals and six assists to her name this season.

Coming out after the half, Reading would have liked to limit Arsenal’s control of the match but a trademark Miedema header made it 4-0 on the night.

With the result, Reading sit eleventh while Arsenal sit second.

Chelsea v Everton

Scorers: Kirby 25′, Kerr 47′, 74′, England 79′

After a loss against Arsenal in their opening fixture, league champions Chelsea welcomed Everton to Kingsmeadow looking for their first win.

The Toffees, who were previously hammered 4-0 at home by Manchester City, were on a mission to bounce back and take points off a top WSL side.

It was a nervy first half-hour for both teams but patience was a virtue for the hosts when a stunning solo goal from Fran Kirby broke the deadlock.

Everton would have liked to regroup after the break but two minutes after the restart, Megan Finnigan’s poor pass gifted a goal to Sam Kerr for 2-0.

Over time, the visitors managed to stifle Chelsea’s attack and had glimpses of chances at the other end but a second from Kerr and another from Beth England sees them lose by four in back-to-back matches.

With the result, Chelsea sit sixth while Everton sit last.

The WSL first match of the weekend saw Aston Villa split the points with West Ham after a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
