First half flurry as Liverpool shock West Ham

Scorers: Halland 4′, Stengel 20′

Liverpool shocked West Ham as two first-half goals saw the Reds run out convincing winners.

Liverpool stormed into an early lead when Ceri Holland, pouncing on a loose ball in the box following a devastating defensive mix-up, slid it to fire to ball high off the post and into the back of the net.

Katie Stengel made it two at the midway point of the first half with her sixth goal of the season. Stengl started the move as she darted across the face of the defence before the 30-year-old received the ball in the box and fired low into the bottom corner.

The Reds pushed to extend their lead in the second period as Melissa Lawley drifted in off the left flank but her curling effort is well blocked by Kate Longhurst.

Lawley was back in the thick of the action two minutes later as the 28-year-old is afforded time and space on the right flank to pick out Shanice van de Sanden in the box but the Dutch forward couldn’t divert the ball goalward.

Liverpool’s victory sees them leapfrog Brighton and Reading into ninth place, whilst West Ham remains in sixth with 12 points.

Manchester City brush aside Brighton

Scorers: Sarri (OG) 11, Blakstad 19′, Coombs 26′, Lee Geum0 Min 90+3′

Chloe Kelly started the match in blistering fashion, wreaking havoc down the right wing and causing Brighton’s defence all store of problems before the 24-year-old forced an opener as Veatriki Sarri deflected the England international’s corner into her own net.

Not ten minutes later and Kelly was causing problems again as she cut side before bending an effort goalward that was met by a flying Julie Blakstad header to double Man City’s lead.

Laura Coombs put the game to bed long before the halfway point with the goal of the game. The ball broke to the 31-year-old at the top of the box as she took one touch before firing a powerful shot into the top left corner.

Brighton were much improved after the break, although Man City lacked a clinical edge to add to their advantage before the visitors secured a late consolation goal through Lee Geum0 Min in the 93rd minute.

This win sees Man City move to within three points of Arsenal in thrid place whilst Brighton drop to second from the bottom.

Reading put in controlled performance to see off Tottenham

Scorers: Turner (OG) 12′

Tottenham succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Reading, but in truth the scoreline could’ve been bigger for the home side.

Reading looked the better of the two sides from the get-go, but took the lead in unusual circumstances when total confusion in the Tottenham backline saw Amy Turner head into her own net over the flailing hands of goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer.

The home side crashed a shot onto the bar just before the half hour mark, Emma Harries having beaten Spencer but only denied by the woodwork.

Turner then had a chance to make amends for her mistake from a set-piece, but headed her shot over the bar.

Into the second half and Spence was called upon again, saving from point blank range after Tottenham sat too deep and failed to clear their lines.

Any attempt at a comeback was short-lived, and Reading managed the game well, despite illness having gone through the squad earlier in the week.
