But the narrative was unpredictable during the final match day of the season and the title swung between Chelsea and Arsenal on numerous occasions throughout the afternoon.

The Gunners needed a positive result in their match against West Ham, but were also relying on Chelsea to drop points in order to end their reign as champions.

After just 13 minutes, Martha Thomas struck for Man United to give them an early lead. The Blues fired back through Erin Cuthbert, but found themselves trailing once again after 25 minutes when Ella Toone notched a second.

WSL fans around the country were flicking between the two fixtures to keep up with the action and Arsenal star Jordan Nobbs was also watching on anxiously.

The midfielder was not included in the match day squad but was still present at the fixture. She sat on the sidelines and as the camera briefly panned to her, she could be seen holding her phone in her hand and looking nervously up from it.

Freelance journalist Flo Lloyd-Hughes, who was at the fixture between West Ham and Arsenal, tweeted that Nobbs was indeed watching the Chelsea match on her phone, along with with teammate Anna Patten.

At the time of the footage of Nobbs, Chelsea had conceded to United and hope was very much in the Arsenal camp. It was no surprise that the Lioness, who has been with the Gunners for 22 years, looked nervous.

The visuals resonated with many other Arsenal fans, who agreed they were also on tenterhooks during the match.

“She’s one of us,” one supporter tweeted. “You could hear a big chant in the away stand every time [United] scored.”

Another replied saying how nervous they were as the afternoon continued with its twists and turns.

Despite their 2-0 win over the Hammers, it wasn’t enough for Arsenal to win the league title. A stunning brace from Sam Kerr and goals from Cuthbert and Guro Reiten made sure Chelsea lifted the WSL trophy once again. Their third title in a row is a new consecutive record and Chelsea’s fifth overall.

Both London teams will compete in the Champions League next season, along with Manchester City who finished third despite a difficult start to the 2021/22 campaign.
