Scorers: Brynjarsdóttir 3′; Kirby 40′, Kerr 58′, Bright 62′

The visitors took a shock early lead, with midfielder Dagný Brynjarsdóttir rising above everyone to head home shortly after kick-off.

Reigning champions Chelsea had lost their opening WSL fixture to newly-promoted Liverpool and looked somewhat disjointed again, even though they had beaten Manchester City at the weekend.

Despite an uninspiring first half, Emma Hayes’ side pegged West Ham back before the break with a left-footed strike from Fran Kirby.

Chelsea were now beginning to grow into the game, and just before the hour mark they were ahead, when the ball fell kindly to Sam Kerr after a melee in the box.

Just a few minutes later, Millie Bright scored her first goal in two years with a header after a perfectly timed run from a corner.

Then a penalty was awarded against West Ham’s Lucy Parker, who has just received her first England call-up, for a foul on Lauren James.

It was James who stepped up to take the spot-kick herself, but failed to convert.
