Chelsea continued their perfect run in the 2024/25 Women’s Super League season following their latest win over Brighton and Hove Albion. The reigning champions keep their tight grip on the top spot and remain the only club in the table yet to drop a single point.
The six-goal thriller ended in favour of Chelsea, who came out on top with a 4-2 win at Kingsmeadow. Their victory extends their winning streak to nine matches in the WSL this season, with 30 goals on their tally so far.
Hampton; Bright, Nüsken, Cuthbert, Reiten, Lawrence, Bjorn, Kaptein, Rytting Kaneryd, Bronze, Beever-Jones
Baggaley; Pattinson, Bergsvand, Losada, Bremer, Parris, Cankovic, Seike, Carabali, Olislagers, Mclauchlan
While Brighton started an instant attack, it was Chelsea who took advantage as they made a quick break on the counter-attack. The Blues sent early warning signals to the Seagulls. After seeming to struggle within the first five minutes, Brighton found their rhythm quickly and dominated in attack.
After a scare for Chelsea, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s speedy run down the line that gave Chelsea an opportunity on goal. However, it was a brilliant save from Sophie Baggaley that kept the scoreline even. A close attempt from Lucy Bronze was followed by another strike from Rytting Kaneryd but it was Baggaley yet again who denied the chance.
The first yellow card of the game was given to Erin Cuthbert after a foul on Jorelyn Carabalí. The free-kick gave Brighton the chance to make a run on the attack. The ball landed neatly into the feet of Nikita Parris but the ball whizzed far left of the goal. A mighty save from Hannah Hampton came just before the half hour mark as she stretched out her legs to deny Brighton.
After a messy few moments in the box, it was Sjoeke Nüsken who found the opener for Chelsea. Shortly after, the Blues went 2-0 up after Aggie Beever-Jones took advantage of a mistake from Baggaley. However, minutes later, ex-Chelsea player Jelena Čanković put Brighton back in the game.
After five attempts in the first half, Rytting Kaneryd netted Chelsea’s third goal in the 50th minute. Since coming off the bench for the second half, Catarina Macario made an impactful role for the Blues, making multiple strong runs down the pitch. After a quiet few moments on the pitch, Kiko Seike took matters into her own hands and smashed the ball past Hampton to decrease the deficit.
Seike almost found an equaliser following a brilliant through ball from Michelle Agyemang but the chance was pushed out for a corner by Hampton. However, led Nüsken popped up with a stoppage time goal to wound the Seagulls and put the match out of reach.
