A huge WSL weekend brought huge results at both ends of the table. Here is what we took away from it

The Goal of the Season Award

Wrap it up, it’s done. You will not see a better assist in 2023, you will not see a cooler finish.

And to do it in a potential title race decider is just outrageous.

The Ref Watch Award

Manchester United boss Marc Skinner wasn’t happy with the result at Kingsmeadow but he really wasn’t happy with with the officiating after his side had two big penalty appeals turned down.

“They’re stonewall when I watch them both,” Skinner said. “We have to invest in the officials, we have to invest in the surrounding technology that can help.

“We’ve come to the champions’ home ground and put our stamp on it. You need those things to go for you.”

The Square Pegs Award

Arsenal are suddenly back in form and looked superb with the surprise inclusions of Leah Williamson in midfield and Frida Maanum up front on Sunday. And both scored!

Having won the Conti Cup, the Gunners brushed Reading aside despite Stina Blackstenius missing out on top of the Gunners not having Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead available.

That squad depth is now proving itself.

The Nine Lives Award

Tottenham have lost nine in a row now and the gap to bottom of the table is down to just two points.

That has to be a concern, especially as

The Best January Signing Award

While Tottenham’s January signings are yet to translate to better results, Janina Leitzig could claim to be single-handedly keeping Leicester in the hunt.

The Foxes have kept three clean sheets in five games with Leitzig in goal, having kept none and conceded 25 in the nine before she arrived from Bayern Munich.

The Fifth Sense Award

Daly scored the best goal of the game as Aston Villa beat West Ham

but in-form team-mate Jordan Nobbs really took the cake, heading to fifth in the all-time WSL top scorers charts, one clear of Beth Mead.

And taking Villa to fifth in the table in the process.

The Rinse and Repeat Award

Every week we praise Bunny Shaw, every week we praise her for scoring, every week she scores again and is now up to 15 in 15 games this WSL season.

We have run out of words. and City, for their part, have closed the gap to go level on points with rivals Manchester United.
