Another WSL weekend packed with storylines? You bet!
Here are our awards from the last WSL matchday ahead of the international break …
Brighton have not had a quiet week. Heading to West Ham for the first game after the departure of legendary boss Hope Powell, nobody knew what to expect. Nobody would have expected this.
West Ham have had an attacking approach all season but a 5-4 (or 4-5) scoreline is just ridiculous.
Enjoy all the goals right here:
Slightly less bonkers, the biggest game of the weekend was Chelsea’s trip to Manchester United. The Blues, third at the start of the weekend, couldn’t afford to lose ground to a United side chasing a sixth win from six.
They didn’t, and it was in-form ex-United winger Lauren James who perhaps impressed most, keeping a cool head to score her third of the season and help Chelsea to a big 3-1 win.
It wasn’t a day to remember for United or for goalkeeper Mary Earps, then, as she conceded her first goals of the season, but she did also hit a very impressive milestone and a WSL first.
That’s one 100% record gone but the other remains as Arsenal breezed past Leicester.
No Viv Miedema, no Kim Little, no Leah Williamson or Rafaelle. Absolutely no problem against the WSL’s bottom side.
And a special mention for in-form midfielder Frida Maanum, who now has four goals in as many starts since replacing Miedema in the team.
Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw plays, she scores. Again.
Shaw added her seventh goal of the season (in just six appearances) after a pair of Emma Mukandi own goals had put City firmly in control at Reading.
Sunday also saw Tottenham-Everton called off for a waterlogged pitch, so there’s one damp squib for you, and you start to fear there is another in the form of Liverpool.
After beating Chelsea on the opening weekend they’ve lost five in a row, scoring just once. The defence looks solid enough — four teams have conceded more than the Reds — but some goals will be needed from somewhere soon.
