There was an exciting round of matches scheduled in the Women’s Super League on Sunday.
Here is what went down.
Scorers: Tierney 36′, Cayman 38′; Lacasse 49′, Russo 52′, Foord 58′, Pelova 61′, Blacksteniues 75′, Hurtig 90+8′
Arsenal were made to work during their trip to face Leicester if they wanted to stay in the WSL title race.
The Foxes took a shock lead when two goals in two minutes stunned the Gunners. Sam Tierney’s header and Janice Cayman’s poke at the back post were the club’s first-ever goals against their opponents.
But then in the second half Arsenal shook off their early rust with a stunning 12-minute spell.
Summer signings Cloé Lacasse and Alessia Russo made things all square with two composed finishes in the box before each assisting the next two.
Caitlin Foord chipped home a curler and Victoria Pelova added an easy fourth from point-blank range before Stina Blackstenius rolled home another and Lina Hurtig made is six.
Scorers: Connolly OG 77′, Salmon 86′.
Aston Villa got their first WSL points of the season on the board when they narrowly overcame fellow strugglers Bristol City.
An unfortunate own goal from Megan Connolly broke the deadlock at Ashton Gate, before Ebony Salmon made sure of the victory late on.
That win ends Villa’s run of five straight defeats to start the new season and leaves them level on three points with Bristol City at the bottom.
Scorers: Fleming 14′, Kerr 62′, Beever-Jones 90′.
Jessie Fleming gave Emma Hayes’s side the lead in the 14th minute when a loose ball fell to her and she fired home on the volley for 1-0.
The second goal came just after the hour mark and Sam Kerr was the scorer, poking home from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s cross.
And there was just enough time at the end for Aggie Beever-Jones to round off the scoring with an excellent left-footed strike into the top corner.
Scorers: Lee Geum-min 81′
Manchester City suffered a second successive WSL defeat when they were beaten at home by Brighton.
An 81st-minute goal from former City striker Lee Geum-min proved to be the difference between the two sides, and the result lifts the Seagull up to eighth in the table.
Gareth Taylor’s side remain on 10 points from their first six matches.
Scorers: Bizet 27′; Haug 66′
A first Liverpool goal from Sophie Román Haug saw Matt Beard’s side come back to earn a point against Tottenham.
Spurs took the lead mid-way through the first half, when Celin Bizet Ildhusøy picked up the ball inside her own half and finished a superb solo run with a low shot across goalkeeper Rachael Laws.
Liverpool got themselves level just after the hour mark, and Norwegian forward Haug was the scorer, heading home a Yana Daniëls cross for her first goal for the club.
The end of the match was delayed while Tottenham’s Olga Ahtinen received treatment on an injury, and 1-1 was how it finished, a result which leaves both side on 11 points from their first six matches.
Scorers: Geyse 3′, Turner 42′, Parris 45+1′, GarcĂa 88′, Riviere 90′.
Manchester United picked up their third WSL win of the season after a one-sided game against West Ham at Leigh Sports Village.
The hosts took the lead after just three minutes, when Hinata Miyazawa’s volley was deflected into the air, and Geyse got to the loose ball just before goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold to head home.
Millie Turner then made it 2-0 with a brilliant curling effort in the 42nd-minute, before Ella Toone slipped Nikita Parris in to make it 3-0 from close range in first half stoppage time.
It looked like the second half would pass without a goal, until LucĂa GarcĂa got in on the act in the 88th-minute, before Jayde Riviere completed the rout two minutes later.
That result means the Hammers remain on one win from their first six matches.
