Wrexham must brace for Paul Mullin transfer advances: View | OneFootball

Paul Mullin has been Wrexham’s talisman during Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s time as owners of the club.

The Red Dragons have seen a meteoric rise through the English leagues since the Hollywood actors took over the club in November 2020.

Winning the National League last season, Phil Parkinson’s side have now achieved back-to-back promotions to League One, returning to the third tier for the first time since 2005.

Their North American owners have pumped a lot of money into the club, which has seen the club now return to League One after financial issues condemned them to relegation 19 years ago.

They will have aspirations of once again being in the top end of the division, but these hopes could be diminished if Mullin departs the club this summer.

Paul Mullin has been a great player for Wrexham

Mullin arrived in North Wales in the summer of 2021, joining off the back of a brilliant League Two campaign with Cambridge United, winning the Golden Boot. He would score 32 goals in 46 games as the U’s won promotion to League One.

Mullin had rejected a new deal and the chance to play in League One once again to sign for Wrexham, which came as a massive sign of intent from the club about how they planned to do things going forward.

In his first season in the fifth tier, he would score 28 goals as the Red Dragons finished second behind Stockport County - unfortunately losing in the play-off semi-finals to Grimsby Town.

But in his second season, Wrexham would go one better, winning the National League - and Mullin would again be prolific, scoring 38 goals in 46 games. Despite scoring so many goals, Macaulay Langstaff won the Golden Boot after scoring 42 goals for Notts County.

Stepping back up to League Two, Mullin has again shown the ability that was on show with Cambridge, so far scoring 23 goals in 36 League Two games.

Overall though, Mullin has been a key part of Wrexham’s back-to-back promotions and is arguably their best and most important player.

Despite this, Wrexham have to make sure they keep hold of Mullin.

The 29-year-old’s contract does not expire until 2027, having signed a new deal at the turn of the year.

But his new contract and his age will not throw teams off.

Proven goal scorers that consistently put the ball in the back of the net season after season are a premium, and highly sought after.

So Mullin will naturally be of interest to teams across the divisions.

His goal record speaks for itself, and whilst not being the most prolific frontman during the earlier years of his career, he has proven himself in recent seasons at Wrexham and Cambridge.

Wrexham boss Parkinson has already said he would like to keep the core group of players at the club for next season, so it will be a priority for them to keep Mullin.

Whilst it is highly unlikely he will depart, with Mullin never expressing a desire to leave the club, Wrexham have to be prepared to field interest for their star man this summer regardless.
