Wrexham’s Championship opener ended in bitter disappointment, as Southampton struck twice in stoppage time to overturn the visitors’ lead and snatch a 2–1 victory at St Mary's Stadium.

The Red Dragons had looked on course for a dream start when Josh Windass buried a 22nd-minute penalty after Kieffer Moore was hauled down in the area.

The Welsh side even went close to doubling their advantage, with first Windass clipping the crossbar and shortly after Conor Coady firing over.

The hosts had their moments too, forcing several saves from Danny Ward, but Wrexham’s defence held firm until the break.

The second half was a tense affair, with both sides trading chances and yellow cards in equal measure. Wrexham seemed to have weathered the storm - but deep into injury time, the match turned on its head.

First, Ryan Manning whipped in a sublime left-footed free-kick in the 90th minute to draw the Saints level. Then, with the home crowd roaring them on, Jack Stephens smashed home from close range in the sixth added minute after Damion Downs’ clever assist, sealing the win in Will Still’s first game in charge.
