Wrexham AFC are leading the race to sign Sheffield Wednesday's Bailey Cadamarteri on loan.
Wrexham are leading the race to sign Sheffield Wednesday forward Bailey Cadamarteri ahead of several League One rivals, as Phil Parkinson looks to strengthen his attack this summer.
The 19-year-old is seen as a top talent at Hillsborough, having come through the academy, and he enjoyed a breakthrough into the first-team last season, scoring four goals in 23 league appearances as the Owls stayed up thanks to a fine run under boss Danny Rohl.
However, a loan move is seen as the right next step in his development, and journalist Darren Witcoop has revealed that the Red Dragons are looking likely to complete the signing of Cadamarteri.
“Wrexham have emerged as the front-runners to sign in-demand Sheffield Wednesday forward Bailey Cadamarteri on loan.”
Not only is Cadamarter a talented youngster, who has shown his quality in the Championship last season, but if Wrexham do finalise this deal, they would be getting one over some of their rivals in League One.
It had been reported that Huddersfield Town, Stockport County and Blackpool were all interested in the teenager, along with Motherwell and Dundee United.
Therefore, this would be a great bit of business for Wrexham, with Cadamarteri clearly a player that many clubs feel can make a big impact in the third tier this season.
Whilst the previous campaign was positive for Cadamarteri on the whole, he didn’t feature as much as he would’ve wanted during the run-in, and that’s unlikely to change moving forward.
Of course, key figures at Wednesday will still believe that he can make his mark on the team in the years to come, but the reality is that he is currently down the pecking order under Rohl.
So, a loan is exactly what he needs at this stage of his career, and if Cadamarteri can get more game time with Wrexham, it will undoubtedly be a major benefit for his career.
It’s not like he will go straight into the XI at the Racecourse Ground, because Parkinson does have some quality in his squad, notably Paul Mullin, but the Welsh side do need reinforcements, and Cadamarteri brings something different with his pace and willingness to constantly run in behind.
That makes this a potential deal that suits all parties, and the plan for Cadamarteri will be to have a big season with Wrexham before returning to Yorkshire to try and force his way into Rohl’s team.
It has already been a very busy window for the Owls, with Rohl wasting little time as he tries to reshape the squad to build on their miraculous survival last time out.
Given the work he has done, it’s right that the owner looks to back him as much as possible, and you still get the feeling more needs to be done to help the group.
A striker is going to be one of the priorities, amid talk that Sunderland are pushing ahead of Wednesday in the race to sign Ike Ugbo after his impressive loan at Hillsborough back in January.
So, it will be intriguing to see how that plays out, and if it impacts Cadamarteri’s move, as the Owls will be on the lookout for a new number nine.
