Wrexham 3-0 Yeovil: Red Dragon take huge step towards title | OneFootball

Wrexham moved one step closer to promotion to the Football League with a resounding 3-0 win over the now-relegated Yeovil on Tuesday.

Having slipped up last time out against Barnet, there would be no such mistakes this time around as goals from Anthony Forde, James Jones and Paul Mullin got the job done for the Welsh outfit.

The game began with a spell of nice play from Yeovil, but Wrexham grew into the game and the first real opportunity fell to Andy Cannon, who picked up a Paul Mullin pass on the edge of the box but could not keep his effort on target.

Wrexham began to take control of the midfield battle but their final ball was a little sloppy at times, although that was due in part to Yeovil's resolute defence.

The visitors even had the odd sight of goal themselves as Matt Worthington stung the gloves of Ben Foster and Andrew Oluwabori fired in a number of tricky crosses.

As the first half came to a close, Yeovil will have undoubtedly been the happier of the two sides, preventing Wrexham from getting going while also offering a decent threat at the other end of the pitch as well - although a draw would be as good as a defeat in their relegation battle.

Wrexham tried to increase the intensity after the interval. Forde's tame strike caused no problems before Cannon saw another effort deflected wide, but the hosts finally took the lead on the hour mark.

Mullin dinked the ball into the box and, after a touch from a defender, the ball dropped right at the feet of Forde, who thundered home from the edge of the box to put Wrexham ahead.

Elliot Lee was screaming for a penalty soon after but the referee was not interested, before Mullin sent a shot onto the roof of the net, but Wrexham would not have to wait long for their second.

Playing more as a creator, Mullin's cut-back led to some pandemonium in the Yeovil box and in rushed Jones to crash home and all but guarantee three more points for the Red Dragons.

The floodgates had now opened and Mullin soon grabbed the goal his performance deserved, heading home after some excellent work down the wing from Ryan Barnett.

Ben Tozer nearly added a fourth but Yeovil stopper Will Buse was on hand to pull off an excellent save as the visitors tried to hang on in the dying embers, knowing their fate had already been sealed.

The win sees Wrexham move four points clear at the top of the National League with just two games to go, leaving Yeovil resigned to life in the tier below next season.
