Paul Robinson believes we saw “the best of Gareth Bale” on his second Tottenham debut on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Tottenham and England goalkeeper said the fact the Welshman will spend the rest of the season at his former club is “really exciting”.

Bale rejoined Spurs on a season-long loan deal from Real Madrid in September but had to wait until the weekend to feature for the club as he recovered from a knee injury.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month that the 31-year-old was set to feature from the bench against West Ham.

He replaced Steven Bergwijn in the 72nd minute with Tottenham leading 3-0 before they conceded three times in the final 10 minutes to drop two points.

Bale had a golden chance to score a fourth goal for Spurs with the scores at 3-1 but blasted a shot high and wide after creating space outside the box with some neat footwork.

And Robinson believes that opportunity was a glimpse of the Bale of years gone by.

He told Football Insider“He had a great chance using his quick feet on the edge of the box. That was the best of Gareth Bale.

“Ok, the finish was not on the end of it but that would have been the icing on the cake for him.

“We didn’t see much of him. I think it’s going to be a really exciting proposition to have him there for the rest of the season.

“That one glimpse of his quick footwork and that opportunity that he made for himself on the edge of the box is a real sign of what’s to come.”

After the game manager Jose Mourinho refused to blame the result on the introduction of Bale.

He said: “Everyone likes him, and I believe he also likes what he found here. So everything is positive and the focus was not on him.”
