Genk announced yesterday, after days of speculation, that Wouter Vrancken has left the club. The former Mechelen head coach signed a four year contract in the summer of 2022 and almost led the side to the title last season. However, a more difficult campaign this year with some key players leaving has seen the relationship between the head coach and the Genk hierarchy become more and more strained. To highlight the breakdown in relationship, the clubs press release did not thank the head coach and instead said that Vrancken ‘has decided not to honor his long-term commitment with the club’.

Vrancken is now expected to join Gent and take over from the departing Hein Vanhaezebrouck. This may well be before the end of the season, creating an awkward situation in which Vanhaezebrouck will have to leave early despite having wanted to see out the season with the club. Gent have won their play-off with games to spare and will have a chance at European football when they face a team from play-off one.
