Wout Weghorst could be back in the Premier League a lot sooner than anticipated.
Having failed to save Burnley from relegation with just two league goals in 20 games at the back end of last season, the Dutch international was sent out to spend the 2022/23 season on loan at Beşiktaş instead of competing in the Championship.
However, rumours are abound at the moment that Weghorst could be returning to England’s top-flight in the coming days as part of a shock move to Manchester United.
According to the BBC, Weghorst has emerged as a surprise loan target for the Premier League club as they hurriedly shop around for a Cristiano Ronaldo replacement in the January window.
And the rumour mill has only picked up speed since Weghorst looked to be saying goodbye to the Beşiktaş fans after the club’s 2-1 Süper Lig win over Kasimpasa on Saturday night.
There’s still a long way to go before Weghorst appears in the famous red jersey with talks likely required to take place between United, Burnley and Beşiktaş, but the pulling power of one of the world’s biggest clubs might simply be too much to ignore.

And if Weghorst does indeed call the Premier League home again, then it would see him slot straight back into the division’s tallest XI.
With the competition’s official website clocking him in at 6 foot and 5 inches (197cm), Weghorst would indeed take pride of place amongst the division’s tallest ballers.
As such, given that plenty has happened in the transfer market since we last did the maths, we thought that it would be rude not to touch base with the Premier League’s tallest XI.
Taking a look through the database over at worldfootball.net and corroborating where possible with the Premier League’s official player profiles, we’ve created the division’s most towering line-up of all.
Each player must have made a Premier League appearance during their career and must have played at least once in the position we’ve put them in this season.
Any draws have been settled by picking which player out of the two or three that we consider to be the superior footballer and we’ve opted for a 5-3-2 formation to help make the XI as tall as possible with little in the way of imposing wingers or out-and-out full-backs.
Oh, and yes, we have lumped Weghorst in there on the assumption he moves to United – got it? Right then, well, be sure to feel small as you check out the Premier League’s tallest XI below:
Height: 6 foot and 5 inches (198cm)
Height: 6 foot and 6 inches (199cm)
Height: 6 foot and 4 inches (196cm)
Height: 6 foot and 5 inches (196cm)
Height: 6 foot and 5 inches (198cm)
Height: 6 foot and 3 inches (193cm)
Height: 6 foot and 6 inches (200cm)
Reckon they’d be decent from corners?
So, although Weghorst would indeed swagger his way back into the Premier League’s tallest XI if he put pen to paper on a United loan, it’s interesting to note that he would no longer hold the crown of the division’s most imposing striker of all.
Stretching the tape measure at three centimetres above Weghorst, it’s Wolves’ summer signing Kalajdžić who now towers above the other outfield stars of the Premier League.
Sadly, you might not have known that was the case because the former Stuttgart striker picked up an ACL injury on his Wolves debut and might not make another appearance this season.
So although a Weghorst return wouldn’t see Premier League striking reach new heights, he would still represent the most intimidating challenge to Burn and co when it comes to casting a long shadow over opposition penalty areas.
But whether or not that’ll be enough to fill Ronaldo’s boots at Old Trafford remains to be seen…
