The Hatters have been urged to go back in for Wycombe Wanderers forward Richard Kone during the off-season
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Luton Town are teetering on the edge of back-to-back relegations as it stands, with the Hatters having eight games of the season remaining to try and preserve their second tier status.
Matt Bloomfield’s side will be looking to overcome a four-point deficit once we return from the international break, having found themselves 23rd in the Championship after a woeful season on the pitch.
Regardless of which division they find themselves in for the 25/26 campaign, Town are going to have to make some drastic changes to the playing personnel over the summer, with a big turnaround needed to shift the mentality around Kenilworth Road.
With that in mind, we spoke to Football League World’s Luton fan pundit Simon Holden about what one demand he would make regarding the off-season business, and who is in his sights as the summer approaches.
Town’s pursuit of Richard Kone was well publicised during the January transfer window, with as many as four bids reported to have been made for the Wycombe Wanderers frontman, who played under Bloomfield before the boss swapped Adams Park for the Kenny.
The Hatters were said to have been prepared to offer £7 million for the Chairboys’ hotshot, who has 21 goals to his name in all competitions this season, but the League One promotion chasers held firm in their stance that he was not for sale.
Despite that, Holden is of the belief that his side should be doing all they can to make the striker theirs if they stay up this season, with his proficiency in front of goal likely to turn around their fortunes in the future.
When asked about one summer transfer wish he had for Town, he said: “This one is pretty tough because I think it is all going to depend on which league we end up in.
“If we stay up in the Championship, I would like us to pursue Richard Kone again, because I think that Matt Bloomfield has got results out of him when he managed Wycombe.
“I think he would suit what we are trying to do here with the wingers, if we go back to that system. We seem to have reverted back to what Rob Edwards was doing, albeit better with players in their right positions.
“But I think Richard Kone would suit everything we want to be and everything we want to do here at Luton Town Football Club.”
With Wycombe already setting out their stall in terms of rejecting any advances for their top marksman, it would take Luton to stay in the Championship and Wanderers to miss out on promotion for any deal regarding Kone to happen.
Mike Dodds’ side currently sit second in League One on goal difference with nine games remaining of the season, with Kone getting on the scoresheet in Tuesday night’s 3-1 win over Rotherham United to see them regain their place in the top two.
With Wrexham breathing down their necks, the race for promotion is set to go down to the wire in the third tier this season, while Luton still have plenty of work to do to get out of the mess they find themselves in.
Showdowns against Hull City, Stoke City and Derby County are all to come before the campaign comes to an end, meaning the Hatters are set for a nail-biting couple of months ahead, with every point proving valuable in the battle for survival.
