Speaking on Sky Sports Italia (h/t TMW), former Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello took the team to the task after their 1-1 draw against RB Leipzig last night.

Real Madrid put in one of their most hapless performances of the season but managed to eke out a 1-1 draw that sent them through to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.

The performance was so dour, especially in the first half, that the Santiago Bernabeu was whistling and booing at the players at half-time, something manager Carlo Ancelotti admitted that the team deserved.

Now, former Real Madrid manager Capello has dished out criticism over the performance against RB Leipzig, as he said:

“Perhaps Real Madrid lacked air (he joked about the total coverage of the roof of the stadium for the first time in history, ed). But in the end all it took was quality play – if we put Real Madrid’s quality into Leipzig, it would have ended 5-2!”

Capello went on to praise RB Leipzig for turning up and putting up a show at the Bernabeu, saying: “Leipzig played a great game, they dominated and had many chances but they didn’t take advantage of them.

“They played well until the penalty area, there they lacked the quality needed to win and they also had a bit of bad luck with the post at the end. Real Madrid suffered, so much so that the first half ended in booing.”

Discussing how his compatriot and current Real Madrid boss Ancelotti might be feeling after the match, Capello added:

“Surely he is happy with the result, having played such a bad game and still having passed the round, he can only be happy.”
