On-loan Rotherham United striker Will Grigg could be set for a spell on the sidelines through injury, the club’s manager Paul Warne has revealed.

Grigg joined the Millers on a season-long loan from promotion rivals Sunderland back in the summer transfer window.

The striker has so far gone on to make 28 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring six goals in that time.

However, Grigg was forced off ten minutes into the second half of Rotherham’s 1-0 win away at AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night, with an apparent hamstring injury.

Now it seems as though that is a setback that may keep the 30-year-old out of action for quite some time.

Providing an update on what Warne had to say on Grigg’s injury after the game on Twitter, BBC Sheffield reporter Andy Giddings wrote: “#rufc PW says Will Grigg has suffered a suspected hamstring injury and will be scanned tomorrow. PW added: “it doesn’t look good.”

Following that win over AFC Wimbledon, Rotherham have extended their lead at the top of the League One table to nine points, ahead of their derby with Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday afternoon.

Did these 25 former Rotherham players ever get a red card while playing for the club?

The Verdict

This does feel like something of a blow for Rotherham with regards to their attacking options.

With Freddie Ladapo having seemingly dropped out of contention to start since his January transfer request, Grigg has become a more regular feature in the Millers’ starting XI.

As a result, the loss of Grigg now means they are lacking an extra experienced and established presence alongside Michael Smith in attack as they look to get their push for promotion over the line.

However, this could be an opportunity for a promising young striker such as Josh Kayode to really show his ability at this level for the first time, and it will be intriguing to see if he is given the chance to do that.
