During Athletic Club’s final match of the 2022-23 season, against Real Madrid, Yuri Berchiche suffered a broken leg after a strong challenge from Dani Carvajal. He missed the entirety of pre-season, returning almost three months later. Unfortunately, a similar fate could befall him this time around.

Berchiche injured his shoulder in a bad fall during Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano, and Athletic have confirmed that he suffered a dislocation. He is pending further evaluation, but surgery is likely to be a serious possibility, which would mean an extended lay-off.

Berchiche has been a key player for Athletic Club since joining from Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, and he is sure to continue being so going forward. However, he has had rotten luck over the last 12 months, and for the second successive summer, he will be nursing a serious injury problem. The only positive if that he shouldn’t miss too much match action, if any at all.
