Gareth Bale-led Wales have failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup, following their 3-0 loss to England and they failed to match their achievement from the 1958 edition of the tournament.

While they had reached the quarter-finals back then and the game was completely different, Wales knew that their task won’t be easy because of the presence of the USA and England. But they probably had enough confidence from their performances in the 2016 and 2021 Euros. The performances in this tournament though, have made them realise that a new generation of talents have to be brought forward.

Biggest disappointment: Given hope by an over-reliance on Bale, Wales couldn’t do much going forward and Rob Page couldn’t find the right combinations for the forward players. The issues piled up due to the poor performances from the ex-Tottenham star, who didn’t even play the second half against England.

Best player: While Ethan Ampadu had a decent tournament and he started all three games, the Chelsea and Spezia midfielder showed that he is someone that Wales may need to build around in the future.

Grade: D – No real moments to remember for fans and a very dour attacking show.
