Before the FIFA World Cup kicked off, many picked Denmark as their dark horses for the tournament but Kasper Hjulmand’s men have been knocked out of the competition in the group stages following a disastarous campaign.
The Danes failed to show any attacking intent in any of the three games and while they scored once, their attack was largely blunt and it showed in their game against Australia. While they were held to a draw by Tunisia, the African side were actually the better team in the competition. Considering their performances in the Euros and the talent in their squad, the tournament has been quite a disappointing one.
Best Player: Andreas Christensen hasn’t been great for Barcelona but the defender was arguably Denmark’s most important player in three games. He didn’t just score a goal, he also won a fair amount of aerial duels and showed a keen ability to play out from the back – just like he showed at Chelsea.
Biggest disappointment: Denmark’s biggest disappointment isn’t the fact that they got knocked out, it is the fact that they played poorly despite such a good set of players at their hands. While they lacked a proper starting number nine, a host of teams have shown the ability of playing well despite that. And things can only improve from here.
Grade: E – It was a nothing tournament from the Danes, if we are being kind.
