Uruguay will take on South Korea in their FIFA World Cup opener in what promises to be an enticing opening tie for both sides.
While we have already seen two upsets in the tournament, a win for the Asian side could also be considered an upset on Thursday considering the star power that Uruguay possess. While South Korea do boast of both Kim Min-Jae and Son Heung-Min, Uruguay’s stars are spread out across the team.
Regular participants in the World Cups, Uruguay reached the quarter-finals in 2018 and last won the tournament in 1950. South Korea too are regular participants but have not been as successful as Uruguay, as the Round of 16 is the farthest they have gone and that happened in 2010.
Last five games
Uruguay: WDWLW
South Korea: WLDWW
Team news:
Ronald Araujo is a doubt for Uruguay as he had a thigh injury due to which he was nearly about to miss the tournament. Edinson Cavani might not be fully fit, with Luis Suarez and Darwin Nunez expected to start together.
For South Korea, Paulo Bento will have to make a decision on whether Son starts or not as he suffered an eye injury in Spurs’ Champions League game against Marseille. Otherwise, South Korea have a clean bill of health.
Predicted line-ups
Uruguay: Sergio Rochet; Guillermo Varela, Diego Godin, Jose Gimenez, Mathias Olivera; Federico Valverde, Matias Vecino, Rodrigo Bentancur, De Arrascaeta; Luis Suarez, Darwin Nunez
South Korea: Kim Seung-gyu; Kim Moon-hwan, Kim Young-gwon, Kim Min-jae, Kim Jin-su; Jung Woo-Young, Hwang In-beom, Lee Jae-sung; Hwang Hee-chan, Son Heung-min, Hwang Ui-jo
