Six teams have already made it through to the last 16 of the World Cup, while nine are definitely going home.

But for 17 others, there’s still everything to play for as we enter the final round of group games, and here are all the possible permutations.

Group A

Who is through and who is out?

Russia and Uruguay are already both through to the next round, while Egypt and Saudi Arabia‘s races are run.

What can happen on match day three?

Russia take on Uruguay in Samara on Monday to determine who will top the group and who will finish second.

Group B

Article image:World Cup permutations: Who can qualify for the round of 16 and how?

Who is through and who is out?

Nobody is quite through yet but it would be a pretty big shock if Spain didn’t make it to the last 16. Pointless Morocco are already out.

What can happen on match day three?

Portugal face Iran on Monday in what is likely to be a winner takes all showdown in Kaliningrad.

However, if those two draw and Morocco beat Spain by two or more goals, Portugal and Iran will go through and Spain will go home.

Group C

Article image:World Cup permutations: Who can qualify for the round of 16 and how?

Who is through and who is out?

France are through to the next round having picked up six points, while Peru are off home.

What can happen on match day three?

Denmark need just a draw against France on Tuesday to advance to the last 16, but even a defeat will be good enough if Australia fail to beat Peru.

Group D

Article image:World Cup permutations: Who can qualify for the round of 16 and how?

Who is through and who is out?

Croatia are through, but nobody is out just yet.

What can happen on match day three?

Just a point against Iceland on Tuesday will be enough to guarantee Croatia top spot but Argentina will need to beat Nigeria and hope Iceland don’t win if they’re to claw this one back from the dead.

A Nigeria win will guarantee their progression, but even a draw would be enough unless Iceland beat Croatia by two clear goals.

This one’s close. Closer than close. Closer than you ever could imagine.

Close.

Group E

Article image:World Cup permutations: Who can qualify for the round of 16 and how?

Who is through and who is out?

Costa Rica are out, but nobody is through yet.

What can happen on match day three?

Brazil need a win or a draw against Serbia on Wednesday to make it through, and will also top the group unless Switzerland better their result against Costa Rica.

Switzerland just need to draw that game to guarantee progress, but they’ll still go through if they lose and Serbia also lose. Serbia could go through on goal difference with a draw if Switzerland lose by two or more.

Complicated.

Group F

Article image:World Cup permutations: Who can qualify for the round of 16 and how?

Who is through and who is out?

Nobody is through yet. Despite having won both of their games so far, there is still a very slim chance Mexico could be going home. South Korea are definitely gone.

What can happen on match day three?

El Tri only need a draw against Sweden on Wednesday to officially make it through, while a win will guarantee them top spot.

Germany just need to match Sweden’s result against South Korea to go through but if both teams draw, qualification will be decided by goals scored. They’ve both got two each so far and if their records are still identical after the final group game, Germany will go through by virtue of the fact they beat Sweden 2-1 when the two sides met on Saturday night.

Group G

Article image:World Cup permutations: Who can qualify for the round of 16 and how?

Who is through and who is out?

England and Belgium are through, Panama and Tunisia are out. Easy peasy.

What can happen on match day three?

It’ll be winner takes all when England face Belgium in Kaliningrad on Thursday. The winner will top the group, while the loser will finish second, but a draw could make things quite interesting.

Both teams currently have identical goal differences (eight scored, two conceded) and if this game is tied, the group winner will be determined by fair play. Belgium currently have three yellow cards to England’s two, meaning this could be a battle of discipline more than anything.

Group H

Article image:World Cup permutations: Who can qualify for the round of 16 and how?

Who is through and who is out?

No one is through just yet, but Poland are officially offski.

What can happen on match day three?

Japan just need a draw against Poland on Thursday to guarantee progression, and they’ll be joined in the next round by the winner of Colombia v Senegal.

Senegal only need a draw from that game, however, and if that game finishes level and Japan lose to Poland, Japan will finish third.
