Louis van Gaal has delivered a brilliant response to Angel Di Maria, who once called the Dutchman ‘the worst manager he’s ever had’.

Van Gaal bought the Argentine forward to Manchester United in 2014.

Di Maria’s time at the English giants was brief as he joined Paris Saint-Germain a year later.

What did Di Maria say about Van Gaal?

Di Maria was very critical of Van Gaal and called him the worst manager he has worked under in his long career.

“My problem in Manchester was the coach. Van Gaal was the worst coach of my career,” he told TyC Sports after his departure, per Marca.

“I would score, assist and the next day he would show me my misplaced passes.

“He displaced me from one day to the next, he didn’t like players to be above him.”

How did Van Gaal respond to Di Maria’s criticism?

Van Gaal and Di Maria will be on opposite sides for the World Cup quarter-final between Netherlands and Argentina on Friday.

The Dutch manager, now 71 years old, was asked about Di Maria’s comments in his pre-match press conference.

And he delivered such an epic response that Memphis, who was sitting next to him, couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“Di Maria calling me the worst manager he has ever had? He’s one of the few players with this opinion. I’m really sorry about this & I find it sad he said this,” he said, per ad.nl.

Van Gaal then added: “Memphis had to deal with it too at Manchester & now we kiss each other on the mouth.

“But we are not going to do that here. But that’s how it goes in football. He doesn’t want a kiss on the mouth, which is a shame, but also nice.”

Van Gaal really is something else. Some of the lines he comes out in press conferences and interviews are so bizarre yet brilliant.

Memphis praises Van Gaal

Memphis took Van Gaal’s comment well, noting that he had ‘good humour’.

He added: “We see him as a strong, great coach. This trainer demands a lot from us and it is clear that we all want to give him a good tournament.”

Memphis will no doubt be in the starting lineup for the match against Argentina at Lusail Stadium.

There are doubts whether Di Maria will start. The Juventus man started each of Argentina’s group games but was an unused substitute in their last 16 clash against Australia.
