The draw took place in Auckland, New Zealand this morning and was broadcast live around the world. The latest edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup will see 32 teams participate, an increase of eight teams on the previous tournament in 2019. The identities of 29 participating countries are already known with three more set to be determined by the inter-continental play-offs early next year.
Sarina Wiegman’s England entered the draw as one of the eight top seeds in Pot 1. The Lionesses have been handed a relatively favourable draw with the Group B Play-Off Winner (Senegal, Haiti or Chile), Denmark and China PR joining them in Group D. England will start their campaign against the Group B Play-Off Winner in Brisbane on 22 July 2023 before facing Denmark in their second group match in Sydney on 28 July 2023. The Lionesses will complete their group campaign against China PR in Adelaide on 1 August 2023.
The Lionesses were successful at their previous major tournament, they won the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 on home soil back in July. England are yet to win a FIFA Women’s World Cup, their tournament best came back in 2015 when they won the Bronze Medal in Canada. Wiegman’s side will be confident of reaching new heights in Australia and New Zealand next year.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 will take place between 20 July 2023 and 20 August 2023.
